The Phantom of the Opera from 6th Feb 2008 at Lyric Theatre

Celebrated as the world’s most popular musical of all time, The Phantom of the Opera is returning to QPAC with a spectacular production featuring the country’s original phantom and a local leading lady. In a rare treat for Queensland audiences, Australia’s first Phantom, the extraordinary Anthony Warlow, will perform the lead role for the first time in Brisbane.

The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealously, madness and passions collide.

The Female of the Species from 11th February 2008 at Cremorne Theatre

Meet Margot Mason, pioneer of the 1970s Women’s Liberation movement, fearless academic, and the brilliant comic creation of playwright Joanna Murray-Smith.

Thirty years ago Margot wrote her groundbreaking work and numerous best-sellers followed. Now she has writer’s block. Molly, an unannounced visitor and committed fan of Margot and her work, offers a potential solution – until Molly produces a gun and calmly informs Margot that she intends to kill her!

Joanna Murray-Smith’s deliciously wicked comedy deftly walks the tightrope between satire and farce proving the female of the species is not only deadlier, but funnier than the male.

The Danger Age from 28th Feb 2008 at Roundhouse Theatre

Quirky, funny and magical.

It’s 1942 and, in the small town of Kalbarri in Western Australia, there’s a little boy with a lot on his mind. John’s asthma is making him a target at school, his mum is having it off with the Japanese doctor and his only friend is a Koori. But all these problems pale into insignificance when, on his tenth birthday, John receives a disturbing phone call from the President of the United States! With his ragtag army of misfits, he sets about saving Kalbarri from destruction.

A playful parable for our time from Australia’s hottest young playwright.
